Toe Lengthening - functionally and aesthetically challenging situations caused by excessively short toes
Isolated excessively short toes can be aesthetically challenging, and in some cases, functionally impairing.
Causes include genetically determined anomalies (such as brachydactyly – excessively short toe) and brachymetatarsia (excessively short metatarsal bone, leading to an apparently short toe), or improperly performed hammer and claw toe surgeries.
With the help of small bone grafts, aesthetically pleasing results can be achieved in most cases of brachydactyly. In the case of brachymetatarsia (see left), the procedure is more extensive.
The possibilities of toe lengthening depend on the anatomical conditions present (required length correction, bone quality, and condition of the skin).
Treatment: Bony lengthening of a toe
Surgery duration: 60-90 minutes
Anesthesia: Local or regional anesthesia (optionally with twilight sleep) or general anesthesia
Postoperative Care: Suture removal after 14 days, wearing a foot bandage for 5-6 weeks
Return to Daily Activities: 1 to 6 weeks
