Metatarsalgia - Often Caused by Malalignment

Metatarsalgia refers to pain in the forefoot area.

The cause is usually an overload of this area, often indirectly caused by a misalignment in the area of the first metatarsal bone (Hallux valgus).

Pain can be attributed to the nerves in that area (Morton’s neuroma) or to the small metatarsal bones themselves.

If orthopedic insoles are not helpful, and the root cause (e.g., due to Hallux valgus) cannot be addressed, individual painful small metatarsal bones can be surgically elevated to alleviate the pressure on them (Weil’s procedure). Since these surgeries carry a relatively high risk of complications (restricted toe movement, scarring, pain, etc.), they are only performed at ARS PEDIS when other options are ruled out.
